DJ’s Dugout and Bellevue Keno Donate to Gross Catholic
May 14, 2018, Omaha, Neb.—Thanks to the generosity of two donors, Gross Catholic High School’s entire football team will now have the type of technology that can help alert football staff to potential head trauma immediately. The school has received a total of $24,000 from Darwin Hanssen of DJ’s Dugout and John Hassett of Bellevue Keno to purchase 75 Riddell Speedflex helmets with InSite Technology. The technology is particularly important, as studies have shown the long-term impact concussions have on football players.
“Our kids’ safety is a huge priority. Having the best available technology will benefit our kids and reassure our parents,” said Thomas Van Haute, head football coach. Van Haute said the sensors in each helmet will record every hit – at practices and in games – and send it to a database. “It can tell us the types of impacts the players have over a course of a week and allow us to monitor players and adjust practices accordingly to manage impacts,” he said.
Donors Hanssen and Hassett are dedicated to improving player safety in the Bellevue area. “I am a big football fan but a bigger fan of player safety. If these helmets help prevent one player from a brain injury they will be cheap,” said Hassett.
“At DJ’s Dugout we try to support local youth sports and we’re very appreciative to be able to help the Gross Catholic football program. Helmet safety is becoming increasingly more important in football and we’re excited to be a part of this effort with this donation,” said Hanssen.
“Gross Catholic is so very grateful to both DJ’s Dugout and Bellevue Keno for their support in contributing this great gift for our students. These helmets will allow us to provide state-of-the-art safety equipment and technology for our football team. Our entire community is very thankful,” said Dr. Dorothy A. Ostrowski, Gross Catholic High School president.
To thank the donors and celebrate the school’s football program, the school is hosting a Cougar Appreciation Night on May 16 at DJ’s Dugout in Bellevue. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be underwritten by Greg Pivovar of Pivovar Law.
