On Monday, February 4, five different student councils from around the region participated in the annual RCC Leadership Academy. Ralston, Roncalli, Skutt, and Beatrice traveled to Gross Catholic for the event. Scott Backovich was the keynote speaker and also lead a workshop in the afternoon.
Backovich is a youth motivational speaker whose main goal is to connect with students. Gross student council president Emily Fanslau commented on his unique speaking style, “He was the best speaker we’ve had since I’ve been part of RCC. He really related to students well and used humor to get to us.” Backovich has traveled all across the country to speak with a variety of youth leadership groups.
The Leadership Academy is a day to share ideas, meet new people, and bond. Fanslau stated “I think RCC is always good for our student council because it’s a bonding day and it helps us have more spirit and excitement for new ideas.” This is an important event for the student councils. Each year it is hosted at a different school. Next year it is being hosted by Beatrice. Fanslau said “We felt proud that we were able to successfully pull the day off. It takes a lot of planning, but the student council seemed to respond well.”
Some ideas that Gross gained from the conference are Pajama Day, a school wide Easter egg hunt, Powder Buff (guys playing volleyball) and Mr. Cougar (a male beauty pageant). The student council will consider implementing these ideas (if approved by the administration) this year and next. Overall, it was a very successful day!
