Community Leadership Opportunities

Below is a list of leadership workshops and wider community service opportunities.  For additional information, visit these websites or check with the Guidance Department for more information.

Hugh O'Brien Community Youth Leadership Workshop for Freshmen - one-day introductory HOBY leadership training for high school freshmen, providing face-to-face interaction between freshmen students and distinguished leaders from all walks of life. Students participate in team-building activities, take part in community service projects, and listen to presentations given by motivational speakers and local community leaders.

Hugh O'Brien U.S. State Leadership Seminar for Sophomores - designed for high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, schools, workplace and community.  Applications are due in September and the seminar takes place the following June.

Nebraska Leadership Seminar for Sophomores - four-day leadership seminar for Nebraska high school sophomores. Through interactive activities and personal interaction with other leaders, NLS helps students grow as leaders by developing their own strengths and working with the strengths of others. Registration is open in the fall and the seminar takes place the following June.

Youth Leadership Omaha for Sophomores -  sponsored by Creighton University’s College of Business, Youth Leadership Omaha (YLO) is an interactive leadership development program which informs, motivates and increases the awareness of selected high school sophomores through issue-oriented seminars and interaction with community decision-makers.  Application forms are due in September and the program begins in November.

Prejudice Elimination Workshop for Juniors - annual all-day interactive anti-bias program for high school Juniors offered in the fall.

American Legion Boys & Girls State for Juniors - teaches how government works while developing leadership skills & an appreciation for citizens' rights.  Applications are typically due in February and the program takes place in June.

Camp OK Olympia Kiwanis for Juniors & Seniors - Students may serve in camp counselor roles.

U.S. Senate Youth Program for Juniors & Seniors - educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service.  Applications are due in October and the program takes place in March.

Attorney General’s Youth Advisory Council for Juniors & Seniors - comprised of high school juniors and seniors from across the state, and is designed to involve Nebraska students in the processes of government and law.  Applications are due in October.

Project Extra Mile  - group encouraging young people to take the lead in solving the problem of underage drinking in their community.

Operation Others - non-profit student-run group with a mission to provide food boxes to over 1600 families and to create awareness for the issue of food insecurity in our selves and the broader community in order to encourage a preferential option for the poor.  Catholic high school students from throughout the Omaha area participate throughout the holiday season.
