Academic Decathlon

Gross Catholic’s Academic Decathlon team participates in several academic competitions, including the national academic decathlon program, the River Cities Conference Academic Challenge, and area quiz bowls.The national Academic Decathlon program tests students in ten categories: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social science, and speech. The team meets during a regularly scheduled class period.

State Competition

The Academic Decathlon team won first place as the Medium School State Champion on February 17-18, 2012 at Creighton University.  The team consisting of Paige Krupa, Tessa Boukal, Libby Edmundson, Mike Friend, Megan Begley, Chayse Kerzman, and Alex Shaddy will now compete in an online competition for Nationals.
 
Paige Krupa finished as the high scorer from Gross Catholic at state competition.

2012

The Academic Decathlon team finished in first place finish at regional competition on January 23, 2012. 

Individual medal winners were Matt Sis who earned a gold medal for top scorer from Gross Catholic and bronze medals in math and economics in the honors division; Paige Krupa earned a silver medal in language and literature and a gold medal in art in the honors division; Tessa Boukal earned a bronze medal in art in the honors alternate division; Libby Edmundson earned a bronze medal in language and literature in the honors alternate division; Mike Friend earned silver medals in economics and language and literature and a bronze medal in math in the scholastic division; Megan Begley won a silver medal in math in the scholastic division; Alex Shaddy won a gold medal in math, silver medals in economics and language and literature, and bronze medals in science and music in the varsity division; and Chayse Kerzman earned a gold medal in economics, a silver medal in science, and a bronze medal in art in the varsity division.

The team of Matt Sis, Paige Krupa, Mike Friend, Megan Begley, Alex Shaddy, and Chayse Kerzman came in first place in the Super Quiz which covered questions on the Age of Imperialism.

2012

The Academic Decathlon team finished second at the River Cities Conference Academic Challenge on January 9, 2012.  

Individual medal winners were 1) Matt Sis, 1st place Language and Literature, 3rd place Math, and 1st place Super Quiz in the honors division; Paige Krupa, tied for 3rd place Language and Literature, 1st place Art, and 3rd place Super Quiz in the honors division; Megan Begley, 2nd place Language and Literature, 2nd place Art, tied for 3rd place Math, and tied for 2nd place Super Quiz in the scholastic division; Mike Friend, 3rd place Language and Literature, tied for 3rd place in Art, and 3rd place in Science in the scholastic division; and Chayse Kerzman 1st om Language and Literature, 1st in Art, 2nd in Math, 1st in Science, and 3rd in Super Quiz in the varsity division.
 
The team took second place in the Super Quiz.  The team's next competition will be regional competition on January 21 at Gross Catholic.
