Becoming a Global Leader
Meet 2017 Gross Catholic graduate Sam Mora. She is currently studying chemistry and Spanish at Creighton University on the pre-dental track. She is going on a trip this summer.
Sam is among a small group of Creighton University students chosen to travel to the Dominican Republic in order to improve the water quality of poor villages. Students traveling to the Dominican Republic will help save the lives of children and elderly by creating water filtration systems to ensure the availability of safe drinking water.
Sam is excited to take part in this project and travel to another country to serve those in dire need. As part of this elite team, she will be creating water filtration buckets in a Creighton University laboratory located in Santiago. Sam will also have an opportunity to use her Spanish-speaking skills to distribute those buckets to families in different Campos (villages) throughout the country.
Creighton University sponsors this trip every year and many families in the Dominican Republic have already received water filtration buckets. Program participants like Sam will be collecting water samples from families with filtration buckets from previous years, and will test the water in a laboratory setting to ensure that the water is safe to drink. Sam and her fellow classmates will also help repair broken buckets.
Getting into the program is no easy task and only top candidates are selected for this team. During her interview with program leaders, Sam spoke about how Gross Catholic’s school motto, Dux Esto really changed her as a person and impacted her life as a young woman. Sam wants to take “Dux Esto” to a global scale and be a leader to serve in other countries. She believes her quest to internalize and globalize Gross Catholic’s school motto is the reason she was chosen for the program.
Sam departs for her journey on May 11, 2019 and will remain in the Dominican Republic until the first week of June. In the meantime, Sam will continue her studies at Creighton University and begin fundraising for her trip.
“Something I want to say is that Dux Esto is so much more than two Latin words,” states Sam. “Be a leader — is a motto, a way to live your life. Although I graduated two years ago, I carry the motto Dux Esto so much in my daily life and it’s become a part of who I am. It is something that will continue to live inside of me no matter where I go or who I become. The Cougar Family is a family that I hold dearly in my heart. I cannot wait to live out the Marianist Characteristic of Educate for service, justice, and peace that was taught to me at Gross. Your prayers are greatly appreciated and may God bless you.”
