Mar. 26, 2019, Omaha, Neb. – Gross Catholic is pleased to announce that Marty Gilson is its new Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach. Gilson brings more than 35 years of basketball coaching experience to the role having coached 20 years at Madison High School, eight years at Wisner High School – where his team went 87-14 during a four-year stretch winning four conference titles, and two years at East Butler. He also served as the interim varsity girls’ basketball coach at Gross Catholic in 2014.
Gross Catholic brought in Gilson to coach in 2014 just a couple of weeks before the beginning of the season. He had never coached that group of girls before, but found that the team was able to compete at a high level late in the season because of the effort the players. That year, Cougar girls’ basketball made it to the Nebraska State Semifinals – prior to that season, it had been 15 years since the program made it to state. Gilson credits the team for their state qualifying season and notes, “It was really about a group of girls that bought in quickly to a different style of basketball play and coaching.”
Although he grew up in Los Angeles, Gilson has roots in Nebraska. He and his wife, Lori Gilson, have four children and nine grandchildren. Gilson graduated from Wayne State College in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and in 2004 with a Master of Science in Counseling. He has worked in education for more than 39 years having taught both English and Physical Health. Gilson has worked as a guidance counselor for 19 years. Since 2013, he has served as a guidance counselor for freshmen and sophomore students at Gross Catholic.
“Marty is a wonderful addition to our coaching staff and we are thrilled to welcome him again to our Girls’ Varsity Basketball program. He is a great role model for the kids and he brings with him a great deal of experience in both coaching and education,” said Mike Dempsey, Athletic Director and Assistant Principal.
“My hope is that I will bring energy, effort and enthusiasm to the girls’ basketball program,” said Gilson.
