Gross Catholic Goes Green

Green Living for the Cougars

Going green with recycling basketsIf we truly want to solve the pollution problem and go green, the most progress will be made by switching over from single-use plastics to reusable items.

Here are some suggestions for eliminating single-use plastics at school and home:

  • Invest in a reusable water bottle such as a Hydro Flask and do not use disposable plastic water bottles
  • Bring reusable silverware in your lunch box instead of using plastic silverware
  • Pack sandwiches and snacks in reusable containers or silicone baggies instead of plastic baggies
  • Keep reusable shopping bags in your car for trips to the grocery store (if you forget them, paper is a more sustainable choice than plastic)
  • Use Bees Wrap in place of plastic wrap
  • If you need to use disposable cups, choose aluminum cups instead of plastic cups
  • Purchase a bamboo toothbrush instead of a plastic one

Trash signsThis year, the Marianist high schools across the country have committed to developing improvement plans for environmental stewardship in response to Pope Francis’s call to care for creation in his encyclical Laudato Si.You may have heard that Gross Catholic’s environmental science class reimplemented a schoolwide plastic and aluminum recycling program earlier this fall. Read more about Gross Catholic’s improvement plan and the recycling project.

In the process of researching plastic recycling, the environmental science students learned that plastic recycling is really not a long-term solution for reducing pollution and waste. Rather than being truly being recycled, plastic is “downcycled.” This means that it cannot be used to remake the same product over and over. After it is recycled once or twice, it goes to the landfill.

Marianist Founder’s Week 2023

Dedicated to the Founders of the Marianists

Founders’ Week is a celebration of the three founders of the Marianist Family, namely, Father Chaminade, Mother Adèle, and Marie Thérèse. The week-long celebration will include moments of fun, prayer, opportunities to come together in worship, and a opportunity to give back.

Our Lady of Nazareth School

The Founders are hidingThe Marianists have a primary school in Nairobi, Kenya called Our Lady of Nazareth (OLN). Traditionally, Gross Catholic raises money for OLN during Founder’s week. It only takes $125 per year to provide tuition, books, and a daily hot meal to sponsor a child at Our Lady of Nazareth. All week long we will be collecting money for our fellow Marianist School Our Lady of Nazareth located in Nairobi Kenya. So dig into your piggy banks an bring us some cash.  If every student were to donate $5  we would be able to sponsor 15 students!

Founder’s Week Schedule

History of the Founders

William Joseph Chaminade was born on April 8, 1761, in Périgueux, France. He was the 14th of 15 children in the family of Blaise Chaminade and Catherine Béthon.

Early in his life, William knew he wanted to consecrate his life to God; he was ordained as a diocesan priest in 1785.

Due to the French Revolution, in 1797, in fear for his life, Chaminade was driven into exile in Saragossa, Spain. There he prayed daily at the shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar, continuing a devotion to the Blessed Mother that was formed in the earliest days of his childhood. During this time in exile, Chaminade conceived of a plan that would sculpt the rest of his life.

When he was able to return to France in 1800, Fr. Chaminade began implementing his vision. He formed small faith communities called sodalities. In a country where there had been no religious instruction for a decade, he believed this would be the most effective way to reignite Christianity.

Powerful, Brave Women

Later, Fr. Chaminade joined forces with Marie Thérèse Charlotte de Lamourous, an intelligent, brave woman who had served in the underground Church during the French revolution. In partnership with Fr. Chaminade, Marie Thérèse helped form and guide the women’s sections of the sodalities.

Through friends, Fr. Chaminade came into contact with a young woman named Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon. Like Chaminade, Adèle was committed to the “mission of Mary.” In 1816, with support from Chaminade, Adèle founded the Filles de Marie Immaculée, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, commonly known as the Marianist Sisters.

Just a year later, a group of male sodalists came to Chaminade with the goal of forming a religious institute under his direction. On October 2, 1817, these faithful men formed the Society of Mary. Like the Marianist Sisters, this congregation was pledged to carrying out Mary’s apostolic mission in the world.

In the ensuing decades, Fr. Chaminade’s goal of continuing the “mission of Mary” has endured. Today the Marianist Family – brothers, priests, sisters and lay people – continue this mission in more than 30 countries.

We celebrate the founders this week!

Academy Program Grant Students Real-life Opportunities

A Unique Learning Experience

Dual enrollment and Academy classes are here! Gross Catholic has always been known for tailoring its curriculum to its students’ needs. When the high school first opened its doors in the late 60’s, students were able to take woodshop and other various courses to gain hands-on experience and prepare for jobs in the trade industry, if they desired. In the early 2000’s the curriculum shifted and began to offer ACT Prep and AP courses to help better prepare its students to go onto post secondary institutions. During this time the laptop program commenced, which helped incorporate technology in the classroom and jumpstart a new wave of learning for students.

Dual Enrollment Courses Added

In the last couple of years, Gross Catholic has undergone not just a facelift to its academic wing, but a new shift to add more dual enrollment classes. Students who successfully complete these classes earn college credit in addition to high school credit. These courses will also expand student’s knowledge for their future career choice and give them a head start after they graduate. Many of these dual enrollment classes are offered through new Academic Academies, which were introduced in the fall of 2021. The Academies grant students real-life experiences and opportunities for networking outside the traditional classroom setting.

Tim Powers, Dean of Curriculum and Faculty Support, oversees the dual enrollment courses. “The dual enrollment classes allow us to partner with local universities and colleges as well as places like CHI Health. It gives students a handson and unique learning experience based on whatever track program they are enrolled in,” Powers says.

Health Sciences Academy

Senior Audrey Swanson has been studying nursing in the Health Sciences Career Academy. “I started the nursing track program when I was a junior, taking online classes through Metropolitan Community College,” Swanson says. “I just earned my CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification this past summer.” Swanson’s recent certification allows her to divy her time between school and CHI Health Immanuel Hospital, allowing her to apply what she’s learning in her classes to the workplace. I’ve always known I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field,” Swanson says. “It just makes sense that Gross Catholic provides classes and academies for us students, giving us the experience not just for college, but after college too. Students aren’t the only ones attaining certifications for the academies. Gross Catholic’s teachers are required to have at least a master’s degree to teach the college level courses as well attain any specific certifications which come along with facilitating dual enrollment courses.

Suzanne Nano, who oversees the Health Sciences Career Academy and helps supervise the catered curriculum, works hand-in-hand with universities to adjust syllabi based on each student’s needs.

“Our students are getting all the benefits of a university level course, but our classes are still in person and smaller,” Nano says. “This just allows us to continue to show our students more and give them the attention they need.”

Athletic Training Academy

This past year, Gross Catholic added the Athletic Training Track Program. Students are able to take classes such as Care and Prevention of Medical Injuries and Medical Terminology which are just a handful of the newly catered courses in the program. Senior Jake Garcia, who is part of the Athletic Training Track Program hopes to pursue a career in physical therapy. “I came to Gross Catholic because I wanted to play football here,” Garcia recalls. “But this school gives us students the opportunity to try different classes, supports what we might want to do in the future, and that’s something that other kids my age aren’t going to get anywhere else.”

Senior parents: By this time, college applications should be nearly complete and students should be looking to apply for scholarships! Students should also be checking their student portal on the college websites for information related to enrollment deposits, housing applications/deposits and potentially other topics. The student portals usually have “To Do” lists. There have been 7 senior newsletters posted in the google classroom. These newsletters are packed with information! Ask your senior to show you the letters! Scholarship opportunities will increase as we move into the second semester.
