International Students Increase Understanding

From All Over Europe!

Gross Catholic is excited to welcome nine international exchange students this year. These students are usually placed at Gross Catholic through three different programs.

International Programs

The first is Global Outreach. This program is a unique Catholic student exchange program that facilitates exchanges between high schools and church organizations in the United States and Central/Eastern Europe. Global Outreach encourages Christians to grow their faith and servant leadership abilities.

Global Outreach selects young Catholics from churches in Central/Eastern and Northern Europe to spend their junior year of high school in Catholic schools in the Midwest (Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota). The Midwest focus is so that the students might learn how everyday American Catholics live their faith in a tradition of freedom. At the same time, the internationals have the opportunity to share their strong faith commitment with our youth our schools and our parishes, helping to strengthen the spirituality of American Catholics, especially young Catholics.

Another exchange program is EF (Education First) Cultural Exchange. This program fosters global citizenship through cross-cultural understanding, tolerance, open-mindedness, and the creation of global families. This organization works in over 50 countries with over 600 schools and offices.

Lastly, some students are placed at Gross Catholic through the International Student Exchange program. ISE exchange students bravely leave the comfort of home to experience a new culture and way of life in America. Their program encourages students to experience personal growth, increase understanding, and reinforce dedication to service and cooperation. Through the high school exchange experience, students become more well-rounded citizens of the world.

Our nine international exchange students join Gross Catholic from four different countries including Spain, France, Germany and Slovakia. Meet some of our foreign exchange students:

Martin

Hi, my name is Martin and I am from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. My experience has been great from the very first moment. I joined the football team before the start of the school year, so I entered a very good community. I love it at school too. Gross Catholic High School is full of welcoming young people who are very curious about exchange students from Europe.

High school students in the United States have many benefits in comparison to my school in Bratislava. For example, students here can play sports at their school and compete against other schools. In Slovakia, our schools are mostly for education. I had to join a sports club in Slovakia to be able to play sports. So sports is one of the things I enjoy the most about being here.

I am excited about many new interesting things and activities, which studying at Gross Catholic offers. One of those is a personal finance class. People at a young age should study more about finances. I did not have this kind of class at my school and that is why I decided to add it to my schedule here.

International student MartinI enjoy being part of this school because of the great people who create an amazing community. Particularly, our house system, the competition that it brings and the friendly atmosphere. I also admire how supportive and passionate people are at Gross Catholic. The thing that I was the most scared of entering a new school was obviously if I am going to feel welcomed. I can say that I am not afraid anymore because it took less than a week for me to feel at home. I am thankful every day to be a part of the big Cougar family.
(Photo: Summer holidays with Martin’s family in the High Tatras.)

Matheo

My name is Matheo and I am from France, precisely Alsace, just next to Germany. I think that the best experience that I have had so far was the sorting ceremony with the four-way tug of war. In my high school we do not have houses like at Gross Catholic so it was a new experience for me and I really liked it. The ambiance is awesome!

In general, school here is very different compared to my French high school because in France I usually do not finish my school day until 5 or 6 pm. Sports are much more important here than in France and I enjoy it.  Also the dress code is much different here. In France I am in a private Catholic high school but the uniform is not mandatory. I find that the uniform brings everyone around one outfit without making any differences and it is a good thing.

MateoFor the moment, I am living a great experience. I am discovering a lot of new things like traditions (sorting ceremony and houses), I am also learning new subjects that we do not have in France like personal finance and I am very happy to be able to do this at Gross Catholic.

I am thankful to Gross Catholic High School for giving me the opportunity to join their school for one year and for giving me the opportunity to be included.

Helena

HelenaMy name is Helena. I am an exchange student from Munich, Germany. The school system in America is very different compared to the school system in Germany. One difference is that here I can take classes I am interested in like sports medicine, which I really like. I was really excited to try cheerleading and now I am very happy to be part of the team. I had a great time at Gross Catholic so far and I am very excited for the upcoming year.

STREAM Cup Challenge

1st Challenge is September 15th -21st

The Challenges are live! Sign up with Mr. Hamersky!

This fall, Ms. Paulette Neuhalfen, in collaboration with Todd Smith, CEO of Symphony Workforce, are launching a STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Math) Cup Challenge. Students from Catholic high schools across Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa compete against each other in a series of six, seven-day virtual challenges. Real industry problems are presented each challenge week with one of the problems focusing on Social Justice/Purpose. Each challenge takes place on the “Find the Why!” (FTW!) gamified mobile platform with problems presented to the students 48 hours prior to the start date. Student teams place their creation and iteration in the FTW! Platform via 24/7 internet access.

Leading businesses in the state of Nebraska, and nationally, are looking for young people of great faith to lead and innovate in and for their companies. These companies supply their actual, pressing problems for the students to attempt to solve.

Advisors

Students engage with a maximum of five advisors, whom they invite to assist them, once each challenge begins. Advisors include college students from partnering universities including Creighton University, College of St. Mary and Bellevue University. Other advisors include alumni, employees from the company who submits the problem, and other business professionals.

How to Win the STREAM Cup

Students can win the competition two different ways.

The Grit Score: The platform is completely gamified and all actions earn points. The harder you work and engage with the advisors on the platform, the more points a team earns.

The Boom Score: The student teams take the given problem and drive it through a roadmap of questions that culminate with a video pitch (60-160 seconds in length). Points are awarded to students who use their God-given talents in idea creation, dynamic presenting, and creative video production.

What is on the line

1.) Cash prizes
2.) Scholarships
3.) Digital resumes and three assessments to help in your post secondary education journey
4.) Virtual internships (Paid and unpaid internships can be offered at anytime)
5.) Social media swag
6.) Winning school receives a $25,000.00 grant

Parent and Teachers

Why our students should participate in the STREAM Cup Challenges

In order to maintain the mental clarity and physical strength required to do their respective work, Christian leaders are committed to staying healthy in mind and body . Their enthusiasm for what they do is contagious, and it sets a good example for their employees and colleagues.

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessings if we don’t give up.” — Galatians 6:9

Perhaps it’s their calling, but Christian business leaders are known for always thinking, “what’s next?”

Innovation Center Dedication

What an Amazing Space!

Archbishop blesses Innovation CenterOn August 27th, 2021 at 10:30am Gross Catholic held a Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony for the Innovation Center. Archbishop George Lucas led the dedication and blessing of the center. Gross Catholic’s world award-winning and 2021 State Champion robotics team built a robot that cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Partnerships

The Innovation Center supports Gross Catholic’s academic vision, expanding partnerships with local universities and organizations for dual college-credit opportunities. Partnerships include the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University, Bellevue University, Metro Community College, CHI Health and Symphony Workforce’s Find the Why. Construction partners included Carlson West Povondra Architects, Hawkins Construction Company, Morrissey Engineering and the Gross Catholic Engineering Team.

Innovation Center: Only the Beginning

Funded entirely through the generosity of donors, the $1.95 million project is the first of a series of upgrades to the school’s academic wing. The Mission: Innovation Campaign, started by President Emeritus Dr. Dorothy Ostrowski, has come to fruition with the completion of a nearly 10,000 square foot space. “The Innovation Center, located at the heart of the academic wing, will enhance resources and learning opportunities for all subject areas and extra curriculars,” said Vice President of Advancement Stephen Driscoll. “The space, designed for a team atmosphere with moveable furniture and advanced technology, will set the tone for future projects and programs at Gross Catholic,” Driscoll said.

Dedicated to Mr. Hamersky

Center Dedicated to Mr. HamerskyThe Innovation Center was dedicated in honor of Steve Hamersky, who has been on faculty at for over 40 years. Gross Catholic honored Hamersky for his distinguished service given to the school community while serving with outstanding leadership, vision, and ability. Hamersky has served as a model to countless students and made an impact like no other.

Keegan Shanahan, a senior at Gross Catholic High School said, “Mr. Hamersky has been a part of my life since 6th grade and I honestly do not think I would have been so successful in high school without his guidance. Mr. Hamersky has taught me so much about STEM and has truly helped me better myself for the future.”

Dual Enrollment Learning Academies

Students in front of Innovation CenterThe Innovation Center will also house two new academic academies beginning this month. The STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art and Math) Academy and the Health Science Academy.

“The Gross Catholic Innovation Center has helped expand opportunities for our students,” Principal Paulette Neuhalfen, said. “It provides a collaborative learning environment that, in partnership with universities, will serve all students and faculty. We are grateful to be able to share it with an extremely driven group of students who are excited to be the first cohort in our academies,” Neuhalfen said.

Keeping Everyone Connected

What is the Cougar Connection?

The Cougar Connection is Gross Catholic’s quarterly e-newsletter where one can find information of about upcoming events, alumni programs and other ways to stay involved in the Cougar Community.

Campus Ministry

The campus ministry team at Gross Catholic has selected “discipleship” as the theme for this academic year. As followers, learners, and adherents of Jesus Christ we, as his disciples, follow Christ as our Master, teacher, and Lord.

Each of our quarterly Cougar Connections this year, will include scripture from one of the Gospel writers from the New Testament.

“You have heard that is was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.” Matthew 5:43-45

Student Council 2021-2022

Our School Leaders

The school motto (Dux Esto, Be a Leader) is taken very seriously by student council members. Consequently, the Gross Catholic student council builds leaders.

The council is made up of 29 sophomore, junior and senior students who are elected in the spring for the following year.  Importantly, any Gross Catholic student can run for election.

The student council is in charge of many activities including sock hops, spirit posters, various spirit activities, homecoming, prom and Gnimocemoh (that’s homecoming spelled backwards.)

As a matter of fact, the most significant event for the council is homecoming week. The council begins planning homecoming week soon after elections are held in April. Also, the group is especially proud of how successful they are decorating the main gym for the dance. Furthermore, Gross Catholic is famous citywide for their spectacular decorations for the homecoming dance.

Grant For the Geo Garden

Geo Garden with another name plate

This year we have received another $1000 grant from the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District. The money is used to  purchase flowers to plant in the “GHS” located on the hill by the Gross Catholic entrance.

Also, Papio-Missouri River NRD is donating 100 Colorado Blue Spruces and packages of flower seeds to give out for Earth Day. Students or parents can pick these up from the front office, during Earth week (4.19 thru 4.23). Furthermore, please consider sending the NRD a note of thanks. In fact, new this season, next to the gazebo, is an outdoor library box to take a book and/or share a book. They are free to use.

Support the Garden

Library in the gardenThere are several different opportunities to support the arboretum/garden. You can purchase name bricks for $75 (includes up to 3 lines), a bench for $200, trees are $150, your own garden plot is $300, or even a large garden light– $2100. All items personalized with a name plate. Obviously, these items could be a great graduation gift, anniversary gift or a heartfelt memorial.

Another way to get involved is to help tend to the garden. Mr. Rich Carey is working on creating a “Keepers of the Garden” group to help care for each of the gardens.
