Terrence O’Donnell ’98, New Assistant Athletic Director

O’Donnell Returns to His Alma Mater

Terrence O'DonnellGross Catholic is pleased to announce that alumnus Terrence O’Donnell will join the administrative team as Assistant Athletic Director starting this July.

O’Donnell’s Upbringing

To begin with, Terrence attended St. Joan of Arc Elementary and Middle School in Westgate. While at Gross, Terrance was a multi-sport athlete: football, basketball, baseball, and track. Accordingly, he entered Bellevue University to study business and play basketball. After deciding to become a teacher, he transferred to the University of Nebraska, Omaha to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education. While at UNO, he helped coach Bellevue University’s basketball team.

Professional Career

Terrence has held several positions in his professional career. He spent a year in South America teaching middle and high school English in Cali, Colombia. He returned stateside to teach social studies at Omaha South High School. There he coached Freshman and JV boys’ basketball. Subsequently, O’Donnell moved to Bryan High School where for nine years he taught history and sociology and was the Varsity boys’ basketball coach.

Currently, Terrence serves as Athletic Director at St. Joan of Arc where he coordinates physical education for the Dual Language Academy in the Consortium of the Archdiocese of Omaha. At DLA, his emphasis has been on bodily kinesthetic intelligences – helping students understand how to use and control their bodies and the importance of a holistically healthy lifestyle. He has also facilitated partnerships with Creighton University Men’s Soccer and Bellevue University Volleyball to ensure professional development for coaches. This spring he will complete a master’s degree in Educational Leadership at UNO.

Deep Ties to South Omaha

Terrence has deep ties to the South Omaha community and has been influential in athletic communities throughout the city. He was the co-founder and Director of Basketball Development for the girls’ basketball team Mid-City Mambas. Also, O’Donnell has volunteered with Completely Kids and Police Athletics for Community Engagement (PACE). Finally, he is active with the Dual Language Home and School Association and serves on the school board at St. Joan of Arc.

The Family O’Donnell

Terrence is married to Gross alumna, Rosa Valencia ’00, and they have three children. They are parishioners at St. Joan of Arc. Notably, Terrence enjoys triathlon training and mountain biking, practices mindfulness and yoga, and is an avid adventure traveler.

Excited for the Return

“I am incredibly excited to return to Gross and serve this wonderful family. I look forward to working closely with our coaches as they continue to develop our student-athletes to strive to be the best versions of themselves and operate at the highest level of excellence in the classroom, on the field and court, and in the community in such a way as to attract more and more wonderful families to our Marianist mission. Global Outreach Program

Show your Catholic Hospitality

International student MartinHost a Student and Assist Global Outreach in Rebuilding the Church in Eastern Europe…

“I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…” Matthew 25:35

Global Outreach Details

Global Outreach is a program in which high school students from Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary, Ukraine, and Poland) come to the United States to refine their English language and servant leadership skills as well as experience a year in a Catholic high school with an active Catholic family. The program, and the positive experiences it provides for both exchange students and host families, has been featured on Spirit Catholic Radio KVSS, and in articles in The Catholic Voice.

Won’t Your Consider Hosting?

The GO program in Omaha is currently seeking host families for the 2022 – 2023 school year for GO students who will attend Archdiocesan Catholic high schools. Host families provide a loving family for a student for the school year, but are not responsible for tuition and book expenses. Furthermore, the students bring their own spending money from home and are considered members of the family, not merely “guests.”

Many people are reluctant to host an exchange student because they fear they are not the “ideal” family. However, ideal host families live in any part of the city.  As a matter of fact, they are in all stages of life: families with teenagers, empty-nesters, active seniors, young families, childless couples, or single-parent families. The only requirements are that the family be practicing Catholics and willing to welcome the student as a family member.

Families Receive Much

The families who have hosted students in the past attest that through the Global Outreach program, they have received as much as they have given. Can you open your heart and home to a student who is anxious to learn in the United States and be part of a Catholic school and family? Is your family being called to show Catholic hospitality and extend an Omaha welcome to a student for the next school year?

In fact, all three Omaha-area Archdiocesan high schools are willing to accept GO students if host families can be found. Roncalli Catholic will accept 1 student; Skutt Catholic will accept 2 students; Gross Catholic will accept 2 students. In addition, Archbishop Neumann in Wahoo will also accept 1 student. Unfortunately, there are typically more exceptional candidates than families offering to host them.

Further Information

If you are interested in hosting a student or have questions, contact Monsignor James Gilg (402-618-0607) or Chris and Craig Boro (402-556-1554). More information about the Global Outreach Exchange program is at http://globaloutreachprogram.com

Lights for the Baseball Field

Playing Under New Lights

Broken baseball lightsGross Catholic’s baseball program is steeped in tradition and has been a point of pride in our community since the school’s inception in 1968. Recently, our baseball facility suffered major damages from a storm in July 2021. The storm knocked down four wooden light poles and caused further damage to the concession stand, dugouts, bullpen, and fencing.

Gross Catholic is faced with replacing the eight existing wooden light poles with six new galvanized steel poles and lights by Musco. Because this expense is not budgeted, the project required immediate fundraising to secure the needed support.

Goal Achieved

We are proud to announce that, in less than three months of fundraising, we achieved our goal. Baseball alumni and several other Gross Catholic boosters stepped up to the plate, helping us raise more than $92,500.00. These funds will offset the cost of the over $300,000.00 project.

Lights in the treesThis investment will add sustainable benefits that will serve our baseball program, as well as Legion and Junior Cougar Baseball, long into the future. The product assurance and warranty program, which includes materials and onsite labor, will eliminate 100 percent of maintenance costs for the next 25 years.

Removal and Installation of New Lights

Removal of the old light fixtures is scheduled to begin in early February, with the installation of the new fixtures set for early March. We look forward to celebrating this achievement with our community and watching our Cougar baseball team play under lights.

Damaged fenceThe support of this project highlights the commitment that our alumni and community have for Gross Catholic.

Gaby Awarded Full Ride to Princeton

Gaby Gandara is a QuestBridge National College Match Award Winner!

Senior Gaby Gandara recalled sitting looking at her iPad with her mom while she waited to receive news that would have a tremendous impact on her future.

The Early Years at Gross Catholic

Gaby Gandara's senior pictureEarly in high school, Gaby didn’t think her family would ever be able to afford college and doubted herself academically. After her freshman year, Gaby transferred to Gross Catholic. She was familiar with the school and knew several students. Gaby knew, based on how kind the students were, that she would find an accepting and welcoming environment at Gross.

As she adjusted to a new setting, her friends from Gross Catholic and their families helped her branch out and learn more about possible college and career opportunities. She was also encouraged by her teachers to take advanced placement and honors classes. “I have been highly challenged at Gross, and therefore, I discovered that my academic capabilities have no limits. I can always be pushed further than I think or believe” Gaby said. She began to build confidence for what she was capable of and decided college was the next step for her after high school.

Gaby’s Junior and Senior Year

At the beginning of her junior year, Gaby started researching possible college scholarships. She found the QuestBridge National Scholars Network and decided to apply. QuestBridge is a national nonprofit based in Palo Alto, California that connects the nation’s most exceptional, low-income youth with exceptional colleges. Gaby shared the potential opportunity with her guidance counselor, Mrs. Julie McNamara. McNamara helped guide Gaby as she completed numerous steps in the application process, including connecting with her top colleges junior year and submitting essays and recommendation letters her senior year. Gaby eventually was named a QuestBridge National College Match Finalist. Now, all she had to do was wait and see if she received a full ride to a college that she was determined to attend.

The Defining Moment

Gaby and her momThe date finally arrived when she would find out if she would be matched with one of her top college choices. Looking at the screen, she reached for the button and hesitated. She looked at her mom. She even looked at her dog sitting there. And then she pressed the button. Suddenly, the screen filled with confetti! Yes! Princeton University awarded her a full ride for four years of tuition, room and board, transportation expenses and more. Gaby started screaming and jumping up and down with her mom. Her dog got scared and hid under the couch. It was a wonderful moment.

Goals for Gaby

Gaby is extremely excited to be attending Princeton and is bent on challenging herself even more. Gaby said, “I am pursuing a major in Molecular Biology and Psychology with a minor in French on a Pre-Med track.” “I believe I am ready for that new chapter in my life and I strongly believe Gross Catholic has highly contributed to me feeling this way” said Gaby.

Gaby is especially interested in studying abroad through programs that combine research and service opportunities. She will join 110 other QuestBridge Scholarship recipients at Princeton and has already begun connecting with several of her future classmates.

Well done Gaby! Way to Be a Leader! Dux Esto.

Welcome to our new chaplain, Fr. Jeff Mollner!

Fr. MollnerMollner Excited to Be Back in the Area

This July, students, faculty and staff welcomed our new chaplain, Fr. Jeff Mollner. Fr. Jeff jumped right into his chaplain duties assisting as a moderator for the Marianist LIFE summer program. The week-long national program is designed to develop the LIFE Core Team members by creating opportunities to share faith, learn from each other, and to become instruments of peace. Students and moderators connect with LIFE teams across the United States to share faith and ideas to assist in creating community. Other activities included prayer services, reflection, sacraments and service work.

Fr. Jeff said, “I am very excited to be back in South Omaha and back in high school ministry.”

Mollner Creates Opportunities

In addition to offering a weekly Wednesday morning Mass for all Gross Catholic students and families, Fr. Jeff has created opportunities for students and families to grow in their faith. He presided over our annual Grandparents Day Mass in September as well as several other Masses this year. Every Friday, Fr. Jeff spends time in our building and is available to meet with students. He also enjoys praying with various teams and clubs and being able to cheer on the Cougars.

Fr. Mollner’s Background

Fr. Jeff was ordained in 2008 and assigned to St. Margaret Mary Parish in Omaha before moving to Skutt Catholic High School as chaplain in 2011. He spent five years at Skutt Catholic before being assigned as pastor of St. Mary’s in Wayne, Nebraska and chaplain of the Newman Center at Wayne State College. After five years in Wayne, Fr. Jeff was appointed pastor of St. Bernadette and chaplain of Gross Catholic High School.

Cougars Honor Geiger from South High School

Support Each Other

This article was recently published in Dux Esto Magazine

“It feels normal to support each other,” said Barb Brennan ‘01 describing how she felt about giving to the Geiger family and helping to keep Drake Geiger’s memory alive.

Remembering Drake Geiger

Geiger Helmet Sticker on Gross Catholic Football HelmetsThis past summer Omaha South High School Junior Drake Geiger, died suddenly during one of his first football practices of the season. The Cougar family heard of the tragic news and knew they needed to come together to support the Omaha South community. It started with an email, from Mardell Nacarelli, mother of current student Sal Nacarelli ‘23, to the Gross Catholic football parents. The response was immediate from the Cougar family as they came together to collect money to support the Geiger family. Brennan then had the idea to create a sticker to be placed on Gross Catholic’s football helmets. This would be a symbolic way to show their support and keep Drake in everyone’s memory and reminder that this could be one of our own Gross Catholic students.

“It’s not about what school you go to, it’s about community and taking care of each other,” Brennan said. “It means something to show our children how to support each other, no matter what.”

Miranda and BarbMiranda Engelkamp ‘02 started a screenprinting business, Leni and Lou, a little over a year ago. When the global pandemic caused a lot of people to lose their jobs, she wanted to do something to help. Engelkamp started a website to sell her apparel and other novelty items, and donates a portion of the proceeds to several local charities including Completely Kids, Inclusive Communities, Lydia House and Habitat for Humanity. Brennan knew Engelkamp could assist with making her idea come to fruition. She saw this philanthropy from Engelkamp and how she jumps in to help out in any situation. And of course, when Brennan reached out to her, she did just that.

Designing Stickers for Geiger

Engelkamp immediately started working on designing sticker decals for the football helmets. Only eight days after Brennan first contacted her, Engelkamp donated and delivered stickers for both the Gross Catholic football team as well as the Omaha South team. She also made additional stickers and t-shirts that are for sale on her website, with proceeds going to the National Center for Sport Safety.

Delivered

Gross Catholic football players personally delivered their financial donation for the Geiger family and Drake stickers for the football team to the Omaha South High School Athletic Director. The helmet stickers are a small piece that will keep the memory of Geiger alive on the football field.
Brennan said, “It is a small gesture that may not feel like much, but definitely shows how Gross Catholic supports our community. When people show up for each other when they are not asked to, I think it is moving and shows that community is what is most important.”

Top 5 Reasons Families Choose Gross Catholic

Why Choose Gross Catholic?

There are so many reasons why students and their families choose Gross Catholic for their high school. Here are the top 5 reasons.

Smaller school where students are known

There’s a sense of belonging at Gross Catholic High School, like no other. It looks like pride and it feels like family. Our students don’t get lost in the crowd. Instead, they’re given access to exciting opportunities to excel both in and out of the classroom.

“Among the most attractive attributes of Gross Catholic, is its size. As a small Catholic High School, Gross offers its students the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment where they are known. Sending my child to Gross gives me peace-of-mind that she is receiving the instruction and support that she needs from teachers who care about her academic success all while still having access to a number of after-school programs and activities that are important to her.”
-Maureen Hiatt, mother of Jane ‘25

Quality education that prepares students for college

We believe in fostering the learning of boys and girls, challenging them and helping them become productive, successful men and women. Our academic programs prepare students for the real world, by providing them with over 100 different course options, dual credit and college courses, and ACT test preparation classes. We educate our students for life by developing them into agents for change. And we demonstrate this by providing innovative excellence in academics that offer them unique opportunities to cultivate their personal talents and acquire the skills that make them lifelong learners and Christian leaders.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Gross Catholic is preparing our son for college and beyond. The best part of that is, the school is not just preparing him academically, but also socially and spiritually. All of which serves him well throughout adulthood. Week after week we see him being challenged by his teachers to live up to his full potential.”
-Mike Nolte, father of Owen ‘23

It was my child’s first choice for high school

We’re honored that so many of our current students selected Gross Catholic as their first choice. Our students are second to none and it shows – through their efforts in the classroom to their contagious school spirit at our many athletic events and activities. They are what make Gross High great, great, best in the Husker state!

I am an alumnus and wanted to continue the legacy with my child

Pajnagar Family Top 5 reasons to choose Gross CatholicGross Catholic alumni are an integral part of the Cougar Family, and we are honored when our alumni choose to send their children to their alma mater. The Gross Catholic High School Alumni Community—over 8,600 strong—are always welcomed to come home again!

“As a proud alumnae, Gross Catholic provided for me a strong foundation academically, socially and spiritually. Knowing that our four children could have those same opportunities in an environment that encourages service, faith and academics…sending them to Gross Catholic is an honor. I am privileged to “come home” again and again through our children and hope they cherish the same infectious Cougar spirit that I carry with me.”
-Cathie Pajnigar ‘95, mother of James ‘22, Thomas ‘22, Ben ‘23, Ava ‘25

Spiritual formation

We believe in providing a supportive family atmosphere where students can explore and enhance their faith, developing values that last a lifetime. Students are educated for service, justice and peace by offering their time and talents in service to God and others. And in addition to Mass attendance, each student participates in 25 mission hours each year, as part of the Marianist Mission Program.

“While we have worked on developing aspects of faith as a family, we believed it was important to provide this opportunity during the day at school with like minded peers. Developing connections among people of faith makes everyone stronger – the notion that steel sharpens steel – especially at this age when peer pressure runs high. It has been a comfort to know that our daughter is in an environment where religious views are formed and expressed.”
-David Drozd, father of Allison ‘22

There you have it! These are the top reasons families choose Gross Catholic! Which one rings true for you?
